Musical biography
Sophia Chambon is French and Finnish composer. She is interested in timbre and the materiality of sound – particularly in acoustic composition – as well as in the form and the narrative of music. She cultivates the idiomatic properties of each instrument, as well as instrumental and vocal virtuosity.
In 2026, Sophia will complete her Master’s degree in composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris in Stefano Gervasoni’s class and at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki in Veli-Matti Puumala’s class. She has studied orchestration with Matthew Whittall.
She joined the Junior Department of the Sibelius Academy at the University of the Arts Helsinki in 2018, after which she completed her Bachelor’s degree in composition with Juhani Nuorvala, Ville Raasakka and Tapani Länsiö (2020-2023). As part of an Erasmus exchange in Paris, she joined Stefano Gervasoni’s class at the CNSM (2023), and she began her second cycle of composition also with Stefano Gervasoni in 2024. She has also taken courses in new technologies with Grégoire Lorieux, Luis Naón and Yan Maresz (2023-2025).
She has been commissioned to compose music for different festivals and for different ensembles and musicians. Most recently, the Musiques Démesurées festival (Clermont-Ferrand, 2026 edition) has commissioned her a quartet for flute, percussion, violin and cello, which will be premiered by musicians from the Ensemble Intercontemporain (EIC). She has also been commissioned a work by the Finnish festival WhatEverWorks for its November 2026 edition.
In addition to festivals, she has written works for ensembles, such as the Trio Corail (Trio) and the Trio Pauha (Of Morgana LeFey), and for soloists such as soprano Sadelilja Larimo (Kadotetun tyttären muistelmat, I.I, Syksy-sarja…), guitarist Teuvo Taimioja (Cumulus), pianist Tanja Niiranen (Fresco), violinist Orest Smovzh (Capriccietto).
Sophia’s music has been and will be performed at many festivals such as Musiques Démesurées (France, 2026), Ung Nordisk Musik Festival (Denmark, 2026), Kitara Nova (Finland, 2025), Ung Nordisk Musik Festival (Sweden, 2024), Musica Nova (Finland, 2023), Uuden Musiikin Lokakuu (Finland, 2022) and Tampering (Finland, 2022).
It has been performed by ensembles such as the Ensemble Intercontemporain (EIC), Ensemble Next, Quartetto Prometeo, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO), Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Sibelius Academy Conducting Class Orchestra, Defunensemble, Ensemble Uusinta and Tuuli Lindeberg, Ensemble Kaaos, Ensemble Zagros and Trio Corail.
She has participated in masterclasses with composers such as Kaija Saariaho at Uuden Musiikin Lokakuu (2022); Salvatore Sciarrino at the Accademia Chiggiana (2022); Mark Andre, Isabel Mundry and Brice Pauset at the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music (2023); as well as Georges Aperghis, Clara Iannotta, Ramon Lazkano and Joel Hoffman. She participated as an auditor at the ManiFeste festival at IRCAM (2022).
Her work has been kindly supported by the Martin Wegelius Foundation and the Sibelius Foundation. Sophia has been a member of the Board of the contemporary music association Korvat Auki (2021–2023). Since 2025, she has been a member of the prestigious Finnish composers’ union Suomen Säveltäjät.
Her catalogue of works currently includes music for orchestra, ensemble, chamber music, soloists, electroacoustic music and vocal music, including two short operas for singer and ensemble. The latest of these operas, commissioned by soprano Sadelilja Larimo, tells the story of China’s one-child policy from the perspective of children adopted outside China. Sophia is preparing a third short opera for her final work at the Paris Conservatoire (2026).
In addition to composition, Sophia has a bachelor’s degree equivalent in piano from the Sibelius Academy (2021). She specialises in the interpretation of Lieder from the 20th and 21st centuries as well as Lieder composed by female composers from all periods.
Sophia has also taken conducting classes with Ruth Schereiner at the Paris Conservatoire, which has led her to conduct some performances of her own compositions.
